Vertical maxillary excess

What is gummy smile?

Vertical maxillary excess (gummy smile) is when the upper jaw is too long (from top to bottom). This causes too much of the upper teeth to show during smile. This can also make it difficult to close the lips together.

Treatment

Orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery) for gummy smile

Surgery for gummy smile most commonly consists of a LeFort 1 osteotomy (upper jaw surgery), in which the upper jaw is moved upward. This is known as LeFort 1 impaction. This may be done in conjunction with a BSSO (lower jaw surgery)
